Program Outcome 2

Exhibit behaviors and conduct that reflect respect and sensitivity according to physical therapy practice standards.

In Fall 2018, a group of my classmates and I presented on Islamic culture and how their beliefs impact healthcare delivery as PTAs. Some beliefs we discussed included those about food and medicine, appropriate clothing, and healthcare provider- patient interaction. One thing that can make treatment difficult is that women are required to cover their entire bodies except for their eyes and may not be able to take off any clothing for treatment, depending on how liberal the family is. Another belief is that a healthcare provider cannot treat a patient of the opposite gender, which may be difficult based on worker availability. As health care providers, it is our duty to respect their wishes and treat them to the best of our ability. As I mentioned in my cultural competence paper, this shows patients we respect them and establishes trust.
